COMM 2400 Discourse, Culture and Identities

This course examined the complex relationship between identity and elements of talk, with attention to how individuals manage their identities in different situations through communication. I chose this course as an opportunity for reflection on the ways I present particular aspects of my identity using communication. The dialogue assignments helped me to understand how conscious and unconscious decisions about communication allow individuals to actively portray themselves in a certain manner. Acknowledging that every person continuously engages in identity construction helps me understand the immense flexibility within (and between) roles.

Everything in this course served me well in my ability to be self-reflexive, an aspect of leadership I feel is sometimes overlooked, both by those in leadership positions and those participating. We were encouraged to name aspects of our identity and thoroughly examine how these play into our interactions in various settings. Learning about micro-aggressions taught me the importance of thinking a bit longer before speaking, conscious of the words I use. I admittedly struggled with this at first, frustrated with the instances I could recall where I had used micro-aggressions, likely upsetting someone. This exercise in recalling instances when I've used micro-aggressions also enabled me to look more closely at the relationships with friends, family, and classmates where they may be present. This was valuable in highlighting the prevalence of these markers and giving me the chance to actively challenge them. I recall several instances of hearing this "marking" language (and sometimes using it myself) and noticing it. Rather than sitting back and letting the conversation move forward, I was sure to address what was said as a particular form of negative communication pattern; my reason for speaking up was solely to educate and engage in a thoughtful conversation, not belittle or pass judgment. These interjections I understand as crucial to a leader's accountability in being a respectful and positive role model. I've worked to be aware of the words I use and the manner in which I communicate with others, two elements I truly believe influence a leader's ability to guide others. I am hopeful I will remain self-reflective and encourage others to harness positive aspects of their identity as leaders themselves!
